Aga Khan Agency
for Habitat, India

Together we can help
communities and individuals
become self-reliant

Since its inception in 2000, Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) India has worked with communities to build their resilience to the effects of natural hazards and climate change. AKAH promotes risk-informed planning, preparedness, safeguarding key infrastructure, ensuring access to basic services, and creating safe and climate-resilient habitats. With a focus on long-term development, AKAH aims to reduce vulnerability to climate change and disasters through community-led action combining participatory and data-driven approaches. AKAH India is an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) dedicated to improving the quality of life for vulnerable people.

Where We Work

Each of the places where we work, called our regions, has a distinct story and a local community dedicated to improving the quality of life of those in need

GUJARAT

The vast and vivid coastline of Gujarat makes the state highly sensitive to the impacts of climate change. The cities experience rising temperatures, variable rainfall, sea level variations, severe weather events, and cyclonic activity. These issues threaten key infrastructure, affecting people's quality of life and livelihoods. Various initiatives in Gujarat seek to minimize vulnerabilities and promote climate-resilient livelihoods, improving quality of life.

MAHARASHTRA

Due to its environment and geographical characteristics, Maharashtra, on the India’s western coast, is vulnerable to disasters. Urbanization, deforestation, and improper land use further increase disaster susceptibility and make disaster response and recovery difficult. Therefore, addressing the vulnerability of Maharashtra requires comprehensive strategies that integrate climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development practices.

TELANGANA

Semi-arid climate, limited rainfall, and hot summers in Telangana pose significant challenges to adaptation. Heat waves are frequent and intensifying, leading to health risks, and adverse effects on human well-being. Climate impacts also disrupt ecosystems, affecting forests, wetlands, and wildlife habitats. Addressing these vulnerabilities requires a holistic approach focusing on sustainable water management, climate-resilient livelihoods, early warning systems, and community adaptation measures.

Our Partners

AKAH India works closely with governments, nonprofits, businesses, think tanks, and other institutions that share a commitment to build self-reliant and resilient communities.
