The decarbonization initiative is centered around climate mitigation, adaptation, and carbon sequestration. The approach encompasses various strategies such as managing and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, conducting energy audits, implementing energy conservation measures, promoting renewable energy solutions, and creating green spaces for carbon sequestration. These measures aim to achieve multiple benefits including reducing local temperatures, mitigating air pollution, improving soil health, increasing groundwater recharge, enhancing biodiversity, and absorbing carbon.
To effectively reduce GHG emissions, the initiative closely monitors and controls emissions across three scopes: Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (emissions from purchased electricity), and Scope 3 (indirect emissions, including emissions related to construction activities). A key element of the decarbonization strategy involves the establishment of Miyawaki forests or urban mini forests. These forests act as carbon sinks while simultaneously promoting sustainable ecosystem restoration and help in mitigating the urban heat.
AKAH has planted over 200,000 trees through various tree plantation projects across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Telangana in rural and urban areas. AKAH applies the Aga Khan Development Network’s green building guidelines to promote energy and water efficiency, green energy and sustainable materials in new and existing buildings and AKAH is committed to developing low-carbon, energy efficient, safe, and affordable built environment solutions.
