Sustainable Water Solutions: The Impact of Roof Rainwater Harvesting

Ameeshaben Bhailalbhai Mistri, the dedicated principal of Rampar Primary School, noticed how a Roof Rainwater Harvesting structure, constructed by the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH), captured the curiosity of her students. Seizing this as a learning opportunity, she developed an educational module focusing on water conservation and management practices. Through a series of interactive sessions, students learned about water security and the transformative potential of community awareness.

From Classroom to Community: School Initiative Inspired Village-Level Water Solutions

These efforts have instilled a deep appreciation for water conservation across the Rampar community. Recognizing the critical value of sustainable water practices, the community, led by former Sarpanch Narayanbhai, took proactive steps to address local challenges. When an existing lake became saline and unusable, Narayanbhai collaborated with subject matter experts to devise a solution. The result was the construction of a higher-elevation pond designed to retain fresh water for longer periods. This innovative structure now benefits local cattle and serves as a recharge point for refreshing water sources.

AKAH’s approach of blending traditional knowledge with modern solutions has not only addressed immediate water challenges but also empowered the Rampar community to build resilience for the future. Today, water conservation and management are integral to the community’s way of life, demonstrating the impact of collective action and education.

“Rainwater Harvesting has transformed our school and the nearby areas. The collected rainwater helps recharge groundwater, ensuring surrounding wells and ponds provide enough drinking water even in droughts.” – Ameeshaben Bhailalbhai Mistri, Principal of Rampar Primary School
